Powerchair Hockey – The Sport
Powerchair Hockey is a fast-paced, tactical high-performance sport that emphasises technical skill, chair control, and teamwork. It offers athletes who use electric wheelchairs the opportunity to compete intensely, strategically, and ambitiously.
Origins: The sport began in the Netherlands in the early 1970s and has since spread across three continents. In Finland, activities started in 1993.
Who Plays: League participation is open to anyone with a permanent mobility impairment. It is played in mixed-gender teams. Powerchair Hockey is the only team sport suitable for severely disabled athletes, with around 100 participants in Finland.
